Decorating Tips For The Bachelor Pad

A bachelor pad might be the first space that's truly yours. Get down to business and decorate that space for maximum impact and a comfortable style. You'll feel more at home and always be proud to bring friends and family over.

Stick with neutral colors. Browns, blues and taupe are all good choices and solids tend to work better than patterns. If you're renting and are not able to paint the walls, think about other ways to add color. Large prints and artwork are fine, but keep it tasteful.

Choose your furniture well. Since everything is in an open space you'll need it to be ordered and tidy. Try a Murphy bed that will fold out of the way or a Captain's bed with built in storage drawers. Look for other ways to keep clutter tucked away - bins and boxes near the computer workstation desk and shelving on the walls and floor. Pieces that work twice as hard are great, like coffee tables and ottomans with storage space inside.

Keep your stuff out of the way with organization. Every item from that brown boot at the front door to the potted plants at the edge of the room needs to have a place. Have a tidy kitchen, front hall and back corners in order to properly show off your decorating. You'll feel calmer with less clutter and chaos, making your little home a true retreat.

The kitchen should also be in neutral colors. You can't do much about countertops and fixtures already installed, but you can spruce up the cabinets with a coat of paint or stain if necessary. Set out attractive placemats or runners for a splash of color and leave bowls or canisters out on the counter for open storage and decoration.

Don't forget to keep it all clean. Without maids and private chefs this will be left up to you, but with some planning you can handle it all.
