Question about conservation of angular momentum.?
Angular momentum depends on mass, radius, and angular velocity. BUT in the experiment, in which a person sits on a turn table with a bicycle wheel, when he turns the direction of wheel, WHY does he starts spinning himself? I mean, there is no change in either mass, radius OR angular velocity. As the formula is L=wI or L=mwr^2.
The w (actually omega) in the equation L=wI is a vector. That is the point of this experiment. If you turn the direction of the wheel, you don't change its angular speed (magnitude of the vector w), but you do change its direction.
For example, if we define positive w to be up, and the wheel is spinning counterclockwise as viewed from above, then w is positive. If the person on the turn table then flips the wheel upside down, then it will be spinning clockwise, and therefore w will be down, or negative. In the z-direction angular momentum has decreased. In order to compensate, there must be a positive increase in angular momentum of the person and turn table, so the turn table will begin spinning counter-clockwise.
