Getting A Nursery Ready For Your New Arrival
For most parents who are expecting a new arrival, getting the nursery ready is a pleasant and exciting task. With the vast array of options you will find, however, a decision can become difficult when you must choose the furniture and the decor for the room. By planning things out in advance, your results will be achieved in less time and with a greater sense of satisfaction.
You may have some decorations saved from your own nursery or that you used for an older child. If so, inspect them prior to shopping. Put in writing what you have and what its design or color is. As an example, you might want to note that you have a balloon bouquet wall hanging in red, blue, and yellow. Compare your list of items desired to what you have and eliminate duplicates.
You may want to select an overall theme to guide you, and you will have no problem in finding numerous possibilities. Most designers include virtually everything from a bedding collection to wall art in coordinated patterns. A few of the themes offered are fairies, butterflies, animals, and pirates. However, you should feel free to mix and match, perhaps by adding some solids to break the monotony.
The crib is typically the focal point of the nursery. When you are evaluating Baby Cribs, you might wish to consider those that can be changed into youth beds. This can sometimes make the crib more economical, since baby will soon be too old for it and need another bed anyway. Pay special attention to the mattress, making sure it does not leave gaps that could be hazardous to baby. If you have inherited an older crib, be sure it meets or exceeds safety recommendations, like the spacing between the bars.
Make sure that all fabric items purchased for the nursery are flame retardant. This can be a problem when you have inherited vintage items. In general, the recommended rule of thumb to follow is that if you are unsure, do not place the item in the nursery. The same holds true with sleepwear for the baby.
Layered window treatments are usually a good idea in a nursery. Baby will need to nap in the middle of the day, so it can be helpful to reduce the light in the room. While blackout curtains are not needed, a blind or shade that you easily adjust can be very handy. You can let in the light when it is time to play or bathe and dim it for sleep. Make sure any attached cords are placed well beyond grasp of your baby or toddler.
Choose a Changing Table that is very stable and solid. It should have straps attached to hold baby and lessen the possibility of a fall. However, safety straps are not totally infallible, so never leave baby unattended. You may not be on hand the first time your baby turns over, so do not let yourself be caught by surprise. Since it is best to keep all changing supplies nearby, the wall next to the table may be the perfect spot for the diaper stacker.
Before you know it, your new arrival will be ready for a loft bed, a homework desk, and a video game system. Since time flies so quickly, make room in the nursery for visitors to rock baby to sleep or just sit and watch him or her sleep. You will be happy that you did.
In the end, there is only one thing that is absolutely critical for your nursery. That is providing a safe haven for baby. Since all else is flexible, you should create the nursery you want.
