Wood furniture question?

What does it mean when it says a dresser/Change Table/crib is made from engineered-wood products? Is it better to buy pure wood? What about when it says wood products? I don't know if I can afford real wood right now. How do I know if it is going to be good quality and last? My husband is in Iraq so I'm on my own to purchase our son-to-be's Baby Furniture. Thanks!

Engineered wood products are usually inferior to solid wood. The term "engineered" can have different meanings, but usually it implies that the wood frame is of some type compressed wood, such as compressed wood particles or plywood.

These can often be very durable, depending on how much use they receive as well as the elements to which they are exposed, humidity, etc.
